Data List 12 - Platform Compatibility

This data list is finalized here!  (Page locked)

These are the cases in which games for a certain platform can have compatibility to another platform. We always look at the platform-in-case, and check compatibility to the other platform.

  1. Full Compatibility downwards
The usual case: the platform-in-case was released later than the other platform, and will run all games released for the older platform.
Example: The Game Boy Color will run all Game Boy titles.

  2. Full Compatibility upwards
A seldom case: the platform-in-case was released sooner than the other platform, but will run all games released for the newer platform, nonetheless.
Example: None I can think of.

  3. Specific Compatibility downwards
The platform-in-case was released later than the other platform, and will run specific games released for the older platform. This case can occur beside Case 1, when the game experience is different that way.
Example: Beside their overall compatibility, the Game Boy Color offers a color mode for certain Game Boy titles.

  4. Specific Compatibility upwards
The platform-in-case was released sooner than the other platform, but will run specific games released for the newer platform. This case can occur beside Case 2, when the game experience is different that way.
Example: Certain titles released for Game Boy Color offer a black/white mode for running them on the Game Boy.
